Axis 2. Immigrants and minority groups as the focus of public action, institutional practices and public speech

The research developed in this axis concerns how the issue of immigration is formulated within the public space, seen as the site where social actors attempt to symbolically put forward and impose their view on the inclusion or exclusion of immigrants or their descendants. Other research in this axis concentrates on the institutional mechanisms that participate in fabricating differences and hierarchies in terms of the categorisation of people and populations, as well as their discriminatory effects. All of these themes intersect the more general one of racism, viewed as one of the forms that interethnic social relations can take, and of how racism is manifested, in particular through processes of discrimination or segregation.
